STATEMENT OF LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR BOLLING ON MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY
Monday, January 19, 2009
Richmond - Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling today issued the following statement in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in Virginia.
"Today we celebrate the life and legacy of a great American trailblazer who broke down barriers of injustice and prejudice to ensure that all Americans have the same opportunities.
"Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a great leader who recognized the power of non-violent resistance to reach previously unattainable ends of equality and fairness. Dr. King appealed to the spirit of justice and righteousness to end the discrimination of his day. He was a man of great intelligence, personal fortitude and faith, whose life and boundless potential was insensibly cut short.
"Dr. King's impact on our nation is indelible and undeniable. It is appropriate that we remember his many contributions on the eve of the historic inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America, which may not have been possible without the groundbreaking efforts of Dr. King.
"Today, I join all Virginians in honoring the memory and accomplishments of a great American, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr."
